Would be good to see more celebrities publicly breastfeeding!
Seeing the backlash from the beautiful picture of the gorgeous Miranda Kerr with her newborn at her breast has forced me out of my blog desert. When celebrities breastfeed we tend to know about it, when celebrities go one step further and either breastfeed in public or release pictures of themselves feeding, it makes the headlines. Seeing such images is a wonderful thing and is inspiring and encouraging for many mums or mums to be. We are used to seeing celebrities a world away from the average mum, back to their pre baby weight at 6 weeks, looking beautiful every time they step out the front door. Where are the bags under their eyes, the sick/milk on their clothes? Yet by breastfeeding they are doing something that we can relate and aspire to and hopefully achieve. It brings them down to our level and normalises them. They can’t use a nanny if 24/7 if they are breastfeeding their baby. Dannii Minogue has recently had a lot of coverage about juggling breastfeeding her baby Ethan whilst being a working mum and stories like this can only have a positive effect in a society where we are obsessed by celebrity.
It makes me feel sick that people can think to complain about a picture like Miranda’s. The Mirror says “Internet message boards were littered with negative comments about the photograph, ranging from the dismissive “Put it away love, and show some decorum” to the damning “Yuck! This is gross.” Some responses to the picture were downright vicious, such as: “Women who breastfeed in public make me sick. It’s just an excuse to get their baps out. They’re a disgrace and should be ashamed of themselves.” I cannot believe that people actually think like that in this day and age, let alone make a point of complaining about it.
You see more on display in magazines and newspapers on a daily basis. The power of celebrity is huge and if more celebrities did this, I am sure that it would do a huge amount to encourage more mums to breastfeed. Well done Miranda, we think you are great!
